I started working on the boy’s Halloween costume this afternoon. I decided to use a pattern rather than improvising because I thought I would get a better result. I didn’t use patterns when I made the Obi-Wan Kenobi costume for my nephew or the Mulan Princess and Mushu costumes for my niece and nephew, and those costumes turned out fine, albeit with lots of trial and error. I guess I really did have a lot more free time before I had my own kid.

I’m finding that working with a pattern has taken the joy out of this sewing project for me. It’s like a math problem I need to solve. Plus, as much as I hate chopping vegetables when I cook, I despise cutting patterns even more. Is there a service where I can outsource pattern and fabric cutting so that I can just get to the fun part? I mean, I have fun sewing and stuff, but the prep work is mind-numbingly dull. It’s possible that I might have bitten off more than I can chew with this costume project.
