If I could have a do-over, I’d probably enforce an actual bedtime for the boy. As it stands now, the boy pretty much goes to sleep when he’s tired, which could be 7:00 PM or 11:00 PM, depending on the day or circumstance. I know it’s my own fault, but I didn’t arbitrarily decide that I wasn’t going to enforce a bedtime. In fact, I very conscientiously decided not to enforce one. Bedtimes are for squares (and for parents who aren’t lazy and are organized enough to figure out this kind of thing).
Luckily, my kid is more organized than I am and he’ll go to bed on his own when he’s tired, often before busy daddy and me. As we face kindergarten in the Fall, it’s becoming clear that I’m going to have to get the boy to bed at a reasonable hour, lest he becomes that kid who falls asleep in class because his dad is a space cadet who believes in radical parenting.
It’s already 9:00 PM and most kids the boy’s age have been asleep for awhile now. Hopefully the boy will go down soon.
