When you live in the suburbs, you pretty much live and die by the train schedule. Assuming that the trains are running on time, which is mostly true—except when it’s raining or it’s snowing or the sun is shining—if you miss your train, you’re screwed. Sometimes you can hop on a random train and make a connection home. Usually the connections take just as long as waiting for the next train, but psychologically, you feel like you’re making progress simply by leaving Penn Station for any destination West.
